I've just realised this film plays exactly like those old classic submarine war films such as Run Silent Run Deep and The Enemy Below. I cant help think the director was maybe influenced by such films?

@C12830772 Great point. Film composers get too little credit. Many great scores have radically enhanced movies, e.g., the score to Rocky by Bill Conti, and of course the greatest score of them all, that for Once Upon a Time in the West by Ennio Morricone.

Beautiful shot of the U.S.S. Reliant at 0:23! I've always found The Reliant or any Miranda-Class vessel very intriguing mainly cause of the similarities with the (Refit)Enterprise. Especially the nacelles, and the saucer section are the two common traits that both starships share.

Yes. And not only this scene. One of the things that make Wrath of Khan a masterpiece is the excellent score made by James Horner.

And I know for a fact there is a longer version of this moive made. The young engineer was given a larger part, Savik has been established as Half Romulan, and Spock tells Savik not to underestimate the human ego. Can't seem to find it anywhere

One thing about this scene I just love is at 3;05 where you can hear how busy all the comm channels are. If you listen closley it sounds like authentic military chatter during a battle.

This film is the best without a doubt, the music was phenomenal, Ricardo pwnd as Khan, great battles, all round awesomeness this is one film that will never loose it's quality with age.
